Spy Party

Imagine going on a party, when you enter people tell you that there is a spy and a sniper with no skill and you can be randomly killed because of that.


A round of SpyParty is played between two players, one of whom is designated "the spy" while the other is designated "the sniper". The spy must attempt to blend in with a number of non-playing characters within a high-society party setting while completing a pre-determined number of espionage missions (such as planting a bug on a character designated “the ambassador”, or communicating a code phrase to a double agent known to both players) within a time limit. The sniper, who is viewing the party from the outside and does not know which avatar is the spy, must observe all of the characters to deduce which one it is. The sniper wins the round if they identify the spy and shoot them or if the spy runs out of time without finishing their missions. The spy wins the round if they complete all of their missions or if the sniper shoots any character other than the spy.

After the primary game design is finished, publisher Chris Hecker has confirmed that there will be higher game modes in the future, beyond the two-player Spy vs. Sniper game that is currently available.


A high society party is the setting for the tense competitive game SpyParty. Rather than weapons, vehicle chases, and explosions, it's about nuanced behaviour, perception, and deception. As the Spy, one player attempts to complete tasks by disguising oneself into the throng. The Sniper is the other player; who has one bullet to locate and kill the Spy!


The artwork in the game is designed in an artistic and naturalistic style by artist John Cimino. Despite their differences, all of the characters seem to belong in the SpyParty world.


SpyParty tends to be “the most diverse game ever”, which is a type of silly hyperbolic statement, but it is a key guiding principle for game designers to follow when they're concepting characters. Less hyperbolically, the characters in SpyParty represents a wide variety of people who don’t normally appear in video games. This list includes women, minorities, old people, and people with disabilities.

The axes of diversity the game designers actively exploring with the SpyParty characters are: age, gender, ability, race, and body shape. They're also addressing sexual orientation, but in the game mechanics themselves, rather than in character design: there’s a mission called Seduce Target, where you can choose who you’re going to seduce, and it allows any combination of characters to seduce one another.

Yes, in this game, males can flirt males, females, old people, children, disabled people, etc. and profit from them at the same time. It’s realistic? LOL Who knows?


It’s not a particularly deep exploration of sexual preferences, but it’s presenting real-life gameplay. There are many other layers worth exploring eg. class or income-level, while still keeping the game focused on the core perception and deception skills.

Spy Party also keeps the cast diverse in the sense of the archetypes the designers include that definitely acknowledge and embrace some spy and mystery clichés. People can see character in a traditional aristocratic outfit from a country as long as there are others of the same race in more modern business or party attire. Racial stereotypes and harmful cliches would be stunts for the game show.


Well, this game sounds a bit complex and mind-bending. Let's assume that the game is called Gay Party, apparently makes much easier to know what the game takes. In this case, all characters become Gay-based, sniper's mission is shooting the real Gay in the party. Spy becomes any gay character in the game. The otherness of each character is the party contains real gay, fake gay, pretended gay, suspected gay, disabled gay, and bisexual etc.


For both spy and sniper, the party issue is obviously not gay or diversity now. Who's the FIRST person initiated action in the party would be hot goss, because all characters in the party are spy with personal gain.


However, if you're a veteran gamer, you would definitely know there's a third eye watching the game progress - NPC : non-player character is any character in a game that is not controlled by a player. The term originated in traditional tabletop role-playing games where it applies to characters controlled by the gamemaster or referee rather than by another player. In video games, this usually means a character controlled by the computer (instead of a player) that has a predetermined set of behaviors that potentially will impact gameplay, but will not necessarily be the product of true "artificial intelligence."

But the game has a bug where it ends once the Spy gets shot, which means you won't be able to track the moves of characters other than the Spy.

I just came back from brunch, and the game goes on.
