Freedom's Day Off

Updated: Apr 26, 2024

To the dismay of his dean, who would stop at nothing to prevent him, a well-liked high school student Ferris Bueller chooses to take a day off from school and goes to great efforts to make it happen.

John Hughes wrote, co-produced, and directed the 1986 American teen comedy film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The plot revolves around a high school nerd named Ferris, who spends a day in Chicago skipping classes with his girlfriend Sloane and best friend Cameron. Ferris frequently breaches the fourth wall to divulge his methods and inner thoughts.

It took Hughes less than a week to write the screenplay. Filming took place in September 1985 and ended in November, showcasing several Chicago sites such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Wrigley Field, and Sears Tower. Hughes's love letter to Chicago was evident in the film. He wanted to capture as much of Chicago as he could, not only in the scenery and buildings, but also in the spirit.

This movie was released by Paramount Pictures on June 11, 1986, it made $70 million more than its $5 million budget, ranking as the tenth highest-grossing movie in the US of 1986. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

How many Americans would go watching the 38th Anniversary of Ferris Bueller's Day Off?

Artpendix enjoys how the 80s film industry made the trailer look as it was released today because this film still appears to be cutting-edge.

Several of the persons seen dancing during the procession (including the construction worker and the window cleaner) had no prior involvement with the film. They were merely dancing to the music being played, which John Hughes thought so amusing that he directed the camera operators to videotape it.

John Hughes: [The Beatles] Ferris lip-syncs The Beatles' cover of "Twist and Shout". He quotes John Lennon's song "God" ("I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.") Cameron's Detroit Red Wings jersey references Paul McCartney and Wings, as his Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar (which he played on The Beatles' "Yesterday") sported a Detroit Red Wings sticker from the mid-1970s onward. During filming, Hughes "listened to The White Album every single day for fifty-six days" by report.

In Ferris Bueller's Day Off, the Art Institute of Chicago plays a starring role—and on this immersive, small-group tour, people follow in the footsteps of Ferris and his friends all while visiting the museum's best-known masterpieces.

Hughes performed an astounding ontological feat. He lured viewers into embracing his film as an escapist farce, then hit them with a pitch-perfect exploration of teen angst. He snuck genuine art past the multiplex censors. The irony is that censorship in the 80s was more attainable than it is in 2024.

What Hughes did to the Art Institute of Chicago. Backed by a soft, symphonic score, he offers us lengthy shots of the most beautiful paintings in the world: Hoppers, Modiglianis, Pollocks. There is no ulterior plot motive; he is simply celebrating the majesty of the work. People see Cameron, Ferris, and his dishy girlfriend Sloane stand before a trio of Picassos, transfixed.

Cloud Gate is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois.

The sculpture is nicknamed "The Bean" because of its shape, a name Kapoor later grew fond of. Kapoor himself even uses this title when referring to his work. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams.

The Bean is a microcosm of history and the faces of passers-by every day, reflecting the vicissitudes and struggleness of time.

Why not skip class for the sake of art, music, culture, or the reflection of 'Bean'?

Ferris: [after the end credits] ... You're still here? It's over

A-Day-Off, maybe we all need.
